Cal Poly Day at the Swanton Pacific Ranch and Railroad for is for Cal Poly Alumni/Friends and Railroad Enthusiasts.
Al Smith, a Cal Poly Alumni, trusted his Swanton Pacific Ranch with his 1/3 scale railroad to Cal Poly University, San Luis Obispo. Each September the Swanton Railroad holds a Cal Poly Rail Road Days.
Al was also a major contributor to the rebuilding of the 2472 that allowed us to make the inaugural run to Railfair 1991 in Sacramento.
During the 1990's the annual GGRM picnic was held at the Swanton Ranch. Come join us again at this great venue!
The locomotives were built to haul visitors to the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exhibition, held in San Francisco to celebrate both the opening of the Panama Canal and the reconstruction of the city after the 1906 earthquake. These humungous locomotives are 17 feet long and weigh 12 tons.
Long time GGRM member and Board Secretary Jim Prettyleaf, a Cal Poly Alum will be there to lead the tour of this amazing facility.
We hope you will be able to come and enjoy this fun-filled day of riding the trains at Swanton, and be brought up-to-date on projects for both the ranch and railroad. The event is will be at the beautiful Swanton Pacific Ranch, 299 Swanton Rd, Davenport, CA.
